Modalities in Muhammad Husain Haikal’s Short Story “Yad al-Qadar” from the Perspective of Charles J. Fillmore

Abstract

The phenomenon of sentence structure usage is frequently found in the context of Arabic literary works, in which the construction of linguistic elements such as verbs and nouns demonstrates a clear relationship within a narrative, thereby reflecting the semantic relationship between the agent, the action, and the consequence. This can be observed in one form of literary work, namely the short story. The purpose of this study is to uncover and describe the sentence structure specifically the modal elements in the short story “Yad al-Qadar” by Muhammad Husain Haikal through the lens of Charles J. Fillmore’s Case Grammar. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The primary data source consists of the narrative from the short story “Yad al-Qadar”, while the secondary data sources include books, journals, scientific articles, and previous studies relevant to this research. Data were collected through the read-and-record technique, and data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, presentation of the reduced data, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study reveal 33 data points reflecting modality. The modalities identified consist of five types: tense, aspect, negation, adverb, and mood. It is hoped that the results of this study will enrich linguistic research, particularly in the field of case grammar as applied to Arabic literary works, and provide a deeper understanding of the role of modality in constructing meaning, the sequence of events, and the relationships between characters in literary texts.
